It's Not A Small World, We Are Just Small People - Al Gore & Walt Disney's Plot

I think Al Gore Designed It's A Small World When He Was 8 Years Old

If you jammed the world population into the density of Manilla, you could fit every human being on the planet in Washington State

Not happy with the density of Manilla? Ok. Well if you put us all in one area with the density of Fort Wayne, IN, you could fit every human being in the western US plus Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina.

It's A Small World is by far the worst amusement ride in the history of all amusement rides. And I am pretty sure Al Gore designed it...

On May 24, 1956, Al Gore was 8 years old. He decided to take a break from inventing the internet and called up his good buddy Walt Disney. Walt Disney took a break from hating the Jews and decided to listen to Al Gore's idea.

Al's vision: design a ride to convince the world that it is smaller than it really is. Why? Because 50 years to the day - May 24, 2006 - Al Gore knew he would release the greatest powerpoint presentation ever called The Inconvenient Truth, and in order for the premise of the "movie" to be true, humans had to believe they were bigger than they really were.

A small world is to Global Warming like time is to Evolution. For Evolution to be true, it needs a lot of time (hence the reason the world keeps getting older and older1). For Global Warming, we have to believe humans are actually of some real consequence of size when compared to the world. But it just isn't true...

The current world population is 6.6 billion people. The most dense city in terms of population is Manilla with 41,014 people per square kilometer. What does this mean? We can fit the entire world population in the state of Washington. Or maybe better put, humans only take up .108% of all the land on the globe, or .032% of the entire globe (including bodies of water).

Ok, but you say, Andy, who would want to live in Manilla. Fair enough, lets compare it to what I call the "good life." Fort Wayne, IN has a population density of 1,071 people per square kilometer. This means you can fit the the entire world population in the states west of the Mississippi plus Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. Or better put, 4.114% of all the land on the globe, or 1.208% of the entire globe (including bodies of water).

Don't even get me started on the math when we switch from 2-dimensions percentages (area = people per square kilometer) verses 3-dimensional percentage (volume = people per cubic kilometer).

Now the question I pose: are we really as important and influential and in control of this world as we think?

Like I have said before, it isn't that I am against "global warming" per se, I am just skeptical. And despite what Walt Disney and Al Gore came up with, we don't live in a small world, we are just small people.2

1 This isn't a statement on whether evolution is true or false. Just an observation.

2 It should be stated for journalistic integrity that while It's A Small World was designed in 1956, there is no evidence Al Gore had any influence. Nor was he inventing the internet at the age of 8. It is documented that Walt Disney was pretty anti-semitic

Interesting biased reasoning. Of course, what you neglect to point out is how much of the earth's surface those people jammed into the State of Washington would need to survive.

And how much of the earth's surface is polluted by the industrial by-products required to support their lifestyles.

So do excuse me, but I believe that your skepticism is more about trying to reduce the amount of time otherwise rational people would spend on real facts to concentrate on pseudo-facts than it is about any sort of facts that really add substantially to an understanding of our scale of human impact on this resilient but ultimately fragile and unique planet.

Well, to be fair, much of this "documentation" comes from a book which is pretty loose with facts.

I think there's more to it than "Disney was an anti-semite" though I wouldn't be surprised to find various opinions from anyone of that time that I wouldn't consider to be in poor taste.

Beyond that, I concur with Partisan Hack's reading of your article. If we're so insignificant, how to account for the Ozone depletion that humans were largely responsible for?

Hotter sun? Natural cyclical depletion (do we have an accurate Ozone readings before the 1900s?) I don't understand why we think, ohh, the Ozone has gone down for 20 years, it must be us, when the world is as vast and huge as it is.

Yeah, I know that book was pretty shady, and it is why I didn't include any of the other "claims" it makes. But the antisemitism was supposedly pretty defendable. Even the article you linked to says the following:

However, certain items discussed at length in the book do seem to possibly be true, such as Disney's suggested anti-Semitism[citation needed], since Eliot includes quotes on it from Ward Kimball (one of the legendary "Nine Old Men" team of animators) and Henry Ford, a longtime friend of Disney's.

Yeah, Science is wholly incapable of making a determination like that. (Sarcasm noted for posterity.) I wasn't aware that ozone depletion, caused by humans, was controversial...

Are you only saying that because it supports your belief that humans can't cause that sort of issue, or because you have some data that suggests or refutes the widely held view that CFC's caused a depletion until they were regulated?

Great thoughts, SECTIM42; how can you resist the urge to go farther? Let's say we wanted, for a lark, to get all of humanity together one evening for a concert. Something green - Bono maybe. If you put a population of 6.6 billion people onto squares a yard on each side (for boogie room), you could fit us all into a space the size of Everglades National Park, with 100,000 acres to spare.

Another bit of perspective. If you accept that all of the recent increases in CO2 concentration are due to human activity, then we have raised the number of CO2 molecules in every 1,000,000 molecules of our atmosphere from 280 to 380. This is a change of one hundredth of one percent.

Those who think we will come up with new technologies to solve the rapid global warming problem we have triggered are mistaken - we are far less in control of this world as they think.

So we have enough power to "create" the problem, but not enough power to solve the problem?

Where did you get this information from?

              Census: World Population
Forbes: Densest Cities in the World
              Wikipedia: States listed by Area
              CIA World FactBook
              The rest is just math.

There have been a lot of opinions put forth on the subject.

I have yet to see this particular point of view

                Do The Math !!

If you give all the worlds' billions one square yard of turf each to stand on.

There are 5280 feet in a mile, divide by 3, yields > 1,760yds. per mile.

For the sake of argument - the coast of California is 900 miles long.

                1760 yds. per mile x 900 = a line that is 1,584,000 yards.

                1,584,000 x 1760 yards wide = 2,787,840,000 sq. yds. > one mile wide, 900 miles long.

                2,787,840,000 x 3 [ 3 miles wide, 900 miles long ] = 8,363,520,000 sq. yds

Eight Billion.......Three hundred-sixty three Million......Which is a number of [ living ] people not yet, and not likely to be reached in the world..

The ENTIRE WORLD POPULATION and then some fits on one, three mile wide strip of the coast of California !!!

Draw that line on a world map, and it does not amount to a hill of beans.

How big is that in comparison to the corn and wheat fields in American breadbasket states , The Ukraine, Canada , South America, Africa ????

The problem in this world is not overpopulation. It is simply improper utilization.

The Sixty-four Thousand dollar question, is how to rectify the problem, given world politics, and the obnoxiously selfish "me / mine first" attitude rampant on humanity.

                Your turn.......................
