The Real Loser of the Saddleback Civil Forum with Obama, McCain, & Warren (Video)

A True Example of What A Presidential Campaign Should Be

advertisement

One of the greatest moments in a Presidential Campaign happened last night and I am pretty sure we all missed it because we were watching Phelps get his 8th gold medal.

I am not really sure who "won" this discussion; Obama, McCain, and Warren for that matter all represented themselves beautifully. But I know with out a doubt, hands down who the losers were: James Dobson, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Al Franken, Bill Maher, and countless others.

Warren showed us what it truly means to be a patriotic American and to ask the tough questions that we aren't all going to agree on, but deserve to be discussed in a civil, mature, and respectful manner.

There was no "Stop Obama Expresses" allowed at Saddleback. There were no "Evil Neocon Bush Administrations." Simply tough, fair, and introspective questions for two people running for a very tough job.

In the opening segment Warren made the comment

I have to tell you upfront but both these guys are my friends. I don't happen to agree with everything either teach or believe, but they both care deeply about America. They're both Patriots and they have very different views on how America can be strengthened in America. We've got to learn to disagree with out demonizing each other and we need to restore civility. We need to restore civility in our civil discourse and that's the goal of the Saddleback Civil Forum.

Great job Rick! I am very proud of you. Great job!

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Well Rick might have done a great job but he is not running for President all the others bar Bill Maher are little more than well shock-jocks ! To me viewing the tape they were both vunerable on a number of issues. In particular Obama waivering on the meaning & presence of evil similaly McCain was too forthright on the topic saying he would eliminate it. What does he mean by eliminate it ?

Exactly. Which is the real brilliance of this event. I honestly feel this was a better forum than the debates will be, and I am not sure if I am even going to watch the debates now.

Absolutely. But the question is, are these people - all of them - left, right & center - do they help the political discussion in America?

I was proud to see Rick sort of step back and say, I'll give an example of how a political discussion is suppose to be.

James Dobson and the Focus on the Family cronies have shown themselves to be quite irreligious in recent months. Kudos to Warren for bringing back some decency.

Couldn't agree more. This guy makes religious people look good. A rare thing in today's America.

Agree whole-heartedly. That is why I was very proud of Rick.

Good article, but IMO the real loser would be the guy who cheated.

sectim42--thanks for the seed to an interesting article. I thought that the one-on-one interview was a very large step forward in bringing civility to the campaigns. I like the format and the questions. It gave me a way to compare M & O. IMHO, Obama gave the answers that met the criteria of the question but couched his response in phrases that were designed to convey meaning but not antagonize. In an evangelical church venue, could you expect less?? I think that, as president, I would want approaches that would not antagonize, but would be firm in delivery (which Obama's was).

I was quite put off by McCain's continually resorting to anecdotal responses which, IMHO for the most part missed his target.
